Cloud Automation: Build a Bot Army

Last updated on December 30th, 2016 at 02:35 pm

The Cloud has become part of our everyday language, but what is it really? Cloud computing is a type of Internet-based computing that provides shared computer processing resources and data to computers and other devices on demand. It is a model for enabling ubiquitous, on-demand access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources, which can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort.”

The sheer amount of data, storage and networking is mind boggling. How does any business keep their data organized, or secure? How do you access the data you want?

Cloud Automation

Cloud computing has “brought new strategies and challenges to infrastructure monitoring, operations and policy enforcement.”  How do we restore order? Automation.

This answer raises its own set of questions. Can I build my own automation solution? What happens when you store your data in compartmentalized Cloud environments, with different service providers?

You need to take into consideration all of the challenges your tools or apps will face in the Cloud, which generally fall into one of three areas:

  1. Costs
  2. Security
  3. Corporate policy compliance

A company also needs to be able to respond to real-time events in their Cloud environment(s). Solutions therefore need to be scalable and adaptable to the evolving market.

So how do you automate the Cloud? Bots.

What is a bot?

“A bot is software that is designed to automate the kinds of tasks you would usually do on your own, like making a dinner reservation, adding an appointment to your calendar or fetching and displaying information.” (Recode)

If This Then That (IFTTT) logic is at the heart of a bot. Bots start with a simple question, and automate the workflow response within the Cloud infrastructure.

“Bots should be event-driven, and should be how developers and IT professionals solve the challenges and pain points related to cloud adoption. Whether managing a few dozen servers in a single AWS account, or thousands of systems spread across dozens of cloud accounts and providers, automation drives operational awareness, lifecycle automation and compliance.” – DivvyCloud
