B2B News for Friday, September 23, 2022: Two New Grants for Businesses, New Data Security Tool

The Stacy’s Rise Project has expanded into Canada. Applications opened yesterday and close October 28. Four recipients will receive a $15,000 CA grant and access to a mentorship opportunity with PepsiCo Foods Canada and Frito-Lay leadership.

“After a successful U.S. launch in 2019, we are proud to expand the Stacy’s Rise Project and start our journey in Canada where there are more than 1.1 million entrepreneurs.  Across the country, women-owned businesses receive an estimated 4% of VC funding so we know there is more to be done,” said Jess Spaulding, Chief Marketing Officer of PepsiCo Foods Canada. “It is important for programs like the Stacy’s Rise Project to continue expanding, so that more women receive the support they need through funding, mentorship and resources.”

The project has partnered with the Women’s Enterprise Organizations of Canada (WEOC. Women who run small businesses can apply for the grant at www.stacysriseproject.ca.

Grants aren’t limited to women entrepreneurs. Canada’s Building Trades Unions launched a new program called In The Trades this week.  The federally-funded program will help apprentices get started in the skilled trades. The program will provide financial incentives and training support for unionized small and medium-sized contractors that hire, train, and retain first-year apprentices.

“Canada’s Building Trades Unions are leaders in delivering the highest quality training to produce the safest, skilled trades workforce anywhere in the world. With the Building Trades vast network of training centres and employers; and world-class apprenticeship programs, we can ensure apprentices can access job opportunities, training and support to not only start an apprenticeship but complete it,” said Sean Strickland, Executive Director, Canada’s Building Trades Unions. “With the support of the federal government, In The Trades will create opportunities for more Canadians from equity deserving groups to get started in an apprenticeship, while providing support to unionized contractors to grow Canada’s skilled trades workforce.”

Employers can receive a grant of $5,000 for hiring a first-year apprentice. An additional $5,000 will be available if the first-year apprentice is from an equity deserving group.

Commvault has launched ThreatWise, a data security tool with an early warning system that uses decoys to proactively bait bad actors into engaging fake resources. The company says the new tool spots threats in production environments and arms businesses with tools to keep data safe.

“In surveying enterprise IT directors with direct knowledge and influence on their company’s data security strategies, the results we found were eye opening. It is very clear that many IT teams do not have adequate tools in place to detect ransomware attacks on production environments early enough in the attack chain to neutralize stealthy cyber-attacks before they cause harm,” said Jon Oltsik, Senior Principal Analyst and Fellow, Enterprise Strategy Group. “Ransomware has revolved around encryption for a long time, but newer extortion techniques like exfiltration go beyond rapidly spreading malware, and data recovery alone cannot help if sensitive business data is leaked to the Dark Web.”
